For many students, excursions and field trips are among the most enjoyable and memorable parts of their studies, and may even be one of the reasons why they chose this subject. For us as teachers, they offer a chance to step outside the classroom and show what we study in the real world. But what happens when (former) students invite us on an excursion?

The European beech is a key species in Swiss and European forests. However, due to the increasingly hotter and drier climate, it is facing a growing threat from drought. To study its resilience, we planted 190 four-year-old beech saplings in a biodiversity experiment at Irchel Campus.

Beim Umzug von Kartenmaterial in die Universitätsbibliothek sind uns wunderschöne Panoramen aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert aufgefallen. Sie vereinen kartographisches Wissen mit künstlerischer Ästhetik und zeigen den historischen Blick auf Landschaft und Raum. Eine kleine Ausstellung – vor Ort und digital – stellt sie nun ins Rampenlicht.

35 Geographie-Lehrpersonen aus den Kantonen Zürich, Schwyz, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen und Thurgau verbrachten einen Nachmittag am GIUZ und erhielten Einblick in die grosse Vielfalt der Themen und Aktivitäten am Institut.

Nach fast zwei Jahren konnten wir vom administrativen-technischen Stand (ATP) wieder in einem ungezwungenen Rahmen zum Risotto-Essen zusammenkommen. Eine gute Gelegenheit, um uns auszutauschen und zu erfahren, wo allenfalls der Schuh nach der „ver-rückten“ Covid-Zeit drückt.
